Prayer malas have been used for centuries in many spiritual and religious traditions to count mantras or prayers while meditating. They represent a way to connect the human spirit and soul with the earth and to the Divine.
The word mala is from the Sanskrit language of ancient India and Nepal, and translates to “garland” in english, just as the word rosary is a Latin term which means garland of roses.
Traditionally, prayer beads were made with 108 beads plus one guru bead or tassel. The significance of using 108 beads in a mala can be linked to many things - 108 lines of energy connect to form the heart chakra, the diameter of the Sun is 108 times the diameter of the Earth, the distance from the Sun to the Earth is 108 times the diameter of the Sun, and more!
